SHORT VERSION: How does JETPACK create SITEMAP.XML and why does Google not like it?

BACKGROUND: Please look a my directory https://www.commodore.ca/no-SITEMAP.jpg and note that SITEMAP.XML is not there BUT if you surf to https://www.commodore.ca/sitemap.xml, one will appear.

I noticed the issue because Google Search Console (aka webmaster tools) tells me it cannot find my sitemap. If I manually submit the sitemap using https://www.commodore.ca/sitemap.xml Google will tell me it cannot find it. If I immediately resubmit https://www.commodore.ca/sitemap.xml Google says it found it and all is well… for a few days, until Google sends me a notice that they cannot find https://www.commodore.ca/sitemap.xml

I am not using Yoast (removed 2 years ago) or any other SEO/SITEMAP plugin.

I assume there must be some sort of redirect in WP-CONFIG or elsewhere for SITEMAP.XML but I don’t know where that as and MUCH more imporantly, Google doesn’t like it. I see that JETPACK has a wp-content\plugins\jetpack\modules\sitemaps folder but all that is in there are .PHP’s (which no doubt build the .XML file, but I don’t know where it puts it or if it is just in the server memory and not a real file)

I have toggled CREATE SITEMAPS off and on in JETPACK, but SITEMAP.XML does not appear in my root file structure.

    Hi there!

I had a look at your site https://www.commodore.ca and everything looks good on my end, the sitemap is also loading without any issues, although the link to the screenshot you sent us doesn’t work so I can’t see what you meant. Is it possible that your site is intermittently going down which is resulting in problems?

It would be good if you could resend us the email that you received from Google or a screenshot from the Google Search Console.

Unfortunately, I deleted the emails from Google (not smart, I know). The screen shot is still present and I can load it even from my cell (i.e. not logged in) so you should be able to see it: https://www.commodore.ca/no-SITEMAP.jpg

Should there be a SITEMAP.XML in the root or is there some re-direction?

    Thanks,

    We’re getting this error:

The owner of this website (www.commodore.ca) does not allow hotlinking to that resource (/no-SITEMAP.jpg).

Since this seems to be a repeat issue though, do you want to just let us know next time this happens?

Also, I noticed your sitemap, when I click that link, actually shows links to a few different sitemaps. This one seems to work. Can you submit it to Google?

That is great. I forgot I turned that feature on in CloudFlare a few weeks ago. Ya, it works. We had so many people hotlinking our content it was killing us.

I moved it to a different site that I still allow hotlinking on:

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the reminder 🙂
