@cboreland I am only new to WordPress but I think having your images in KB is a step in the right direction.
Two things that I have come across that may help, if you are only using one image remove the slider controls and loading bar:
jumbotron>jumbotron settings>Slider Next/Previous Buttons: Hide
jumbotron>jumbotron settings>Slider Next/Slide Loader Style: None
Failing this you can download download plugins such as “Hummingbird” that helps your WP site load the content faster.

Although I believe there are more plugins to help loads your content faster I’d just search and read through some recommendations this was one of the first ones I found but I’m sure there are more.
