• Hi,

I’m new to wordpress and really want to get to grips with how it all works, I work a lot with other content management systems but wordpress seems to be more a blogging platform to me (which the deeper I get I’ll probably find am wrong).

So to my understanding to create a website homepage to have information blocks rather than news posts how would I do about this, would a certain category add a post to a selected section of my page?

Also, would an image slideshow work on this basis of adding a new post per slide and how do I determine which post goes into these spots.

    Thank you

For your first question: widgets are the way to go, you can register widgets anywhere on a page tempate, and you can pretty much put anything in a widget.
    see http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Plugins/WordPress_Widgets

    Question 2:
There are themes out there, off the top of my head: Bloggie from themify, that have a slideshow built into the theme. For slideshows like that, you specify a category in the options panel, and the slideshow pulls the featured image from each post in that category.
There are also a fair amount of plugins that generate slideshows as well.

Just what I was after thanks.

I found a tutorial on the slideshow part, turns out you do it by posts and using tags and custom fields!
