Slow Loading Times – Inter Var variable font

So I just updated my theme last week to Twenty Twenty. On the face of it, a great clean theme which looks great on mobile.

However, in Google Search Console, all of my pages have gone from moderate loading time to slow loading time.

On further investigation, it looks like the Inter Var variable font is causing the slowdown.

Is there a fix for this – or do WordPress have this on their to-do list.

It seems crazy that this small issue is causing the theme to slow so much.
