Slowed down site during backup

Hi, I really like the options in your backup plugin. I use it to backup the site and save the files onto Google Drive.

Every night, the files are backed up and when the backup is running, the website is absolutely inaccessible.
A webpage loads indefinitely and when I talked to the hosting company, they confirmed that it was the Updraft process running.

We use page caching and really small images to keep it fast but that doesn’t seem to be enough to squeeze a pageload through when the backup process is running.

Could you help me figure out how I can still use your plugin without my site being essentially down during backups?

Hi,

UpdraftPlus uses your server resources when backing up the website. It is possible that your server’s resources are exhausted causing the site to go down. To fix, please check this FAQ: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/how-much-resources-does-updraftplus-need/. It contains ways on how to reduce server resource usage.

Thank you Bryle! I read the article and it helped me understand better.

I decreased the zip size to 100MB – it was 400MB.

My biggest takeaway is that incremental backups and changing the start time are more bandaid fixes but since my site is likely not seeing much traffic at the current times of backup and it still has to perform the backup, the server might be the biggest problem.

Can you recommend some host options?
I somewhat understand server metrics like processors, I/O, memory but I find that I struggle with figuring out which host is actually good and which are just good at marketing.

Thanks Bryle. Very interesting.
Since our audience is in the US, it might be best to stick with servers in the US.
Any tips on choosing a shared host that doesn’t overload their servers with too many sites? It seems better than a VPS server for our needs.

Hi,

Apologies for the late reply.

It is really better to use VPS if you have a website that uses a lot of resources and have many visitors. Other websites on a shared server can affect the performance of your website. Though some shared server limit each user on the amount of resources it can use.
