• This is my first time building a WordPress site. I’m using a theme provided by a hosting company.

I’m working with the owner of the site on this, and today she told me:

Something is corrupted. Since July 10th I have had probably a thousand of WordPress emails that say ” plugins were automatically updated.” There are 50 to 80 of the same message sent minutes apart each day since July 10th including today.

I looked for a way to turn off the notification emails and found and installed this plug-in: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/manage-notification-emails/

I let her know that I installed it, so she shouldn’t receive those notification emails anymore, and she replied:

It doesn’t seem right that the plugins would update 80 times a day. Something seems wrong.

I’ve been installing, uninstalling, and updating plug-ins over the past couple weeks, but not at the volume that would generate 50-80 emails a day.

Is there anything I should check to make sure something isn’t actually corrupt?

Have some of the emails forwarded to you. Check whether they really come from the project in question. Such emails could also be spam from somewhere else.

You could also install a mail logging plugin like this one: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wp-mail-logging/ – this would allow you to see what WordPress is sending. If the emails in question are not there, they come from something else (potentially a spammer).

Thanks for the info. Do you think I have any cause for concern that something could be wrong with the site?

A follow-up: She forwarded one of the emails to me. It’s from wordpress@[thedomain], so I assume it’s legit. It also said that a plug-in had been updated from version 2.9.2 to 2.9.2, which seems odd, unless it was some kind of quick maintenance fix or something.

Hopefully the plug-in I installed will stop those notification emails, but if there’s anything else I should be looking at here, please let me know. I’m proceeding with utmost caution with this site since it’s not mine. Thanks.
