Actually I’m kinda lost.
Imagine the following scenario:
– Product A
— Color Red
— Color Black
– Product B
— Color Red
— Color Black
How do you think the sorting by color would work on these two products?
Well, more like this scenario. Sort by color – Color: Yellow, Color: Red:, Color: Black. So I guess you’d have to have sub-variations. But more specifically I would want to go by SIZE, but same idea – S, M, L, XL). That’s why I asked about meta, maybe products have to be tagged instead of looping through all the options.

– Product B
— Color Red
— Color Yellow

Actually, I don’t know if it would be a confusing feature for users.
Wouldn’t it be better in your case to use a filter plugin?
So users could filter a specific color. Wouldn’t that work best?
