Sorting Displays Oddly

The documentation implies that the arrows will auto display to the right of the column headers, and that they’ll always appear (instead of on hover), but I am seeing neither of these behaviors.

For now, I’ve compromised by changing headers to vertical-align:top and the arrows to bottom center, but as you can image, that doesn’t look great.

How can I restore this intended default functionality?
