Ever since I installed “Popup Maker – Best Rated” and used it for a contact form on my homepage, I am now getting spam. I never got spam prior to that. I’m going to remove it and see if the spam stops. I do use a captcha on my form. Any suggestions?

  • @greybird Unfortunately, email spam is a chronic problem for all WordPress sites. Since I’m not familiar with the details of how your site is configured, I would not necessarily conflate the use of Popup Maker and the increase of spam. They may seem related, but more likely they are not.

Plugins that I have used in the past (and continue to use) that are good at flagging and sidelining spam include:

Akismet (from Automattic, makers of WordPress) – note: if your site if business related, Automattic would like to be paid to use their plugin.

    Anti-Spam Bee

    Cookies for Comments

The latter two are free. I use those latter two on my sites to avoid paying a monthly fee for Akismet. Akismet is also very good and is loaded by default on all WordPress installations.

@yogaman5020 Thank you for your suggestions. I was getting a specific style of spam that seems to have stopped since I uninstalled the plugin, it’s really too early to be sure though.
