• Hi there,

The HTML Importer seems to bomb out whenever it comes across a special character that hasn’t been converted to HTML codes. It converts the page up to the special character, then stops.

I know there is the “Convert special characters (accents and symbols)” setting – but it doesn’t seem to help. Is there a way I can edit the importer to better handle these characters?

    Thanks!
    Liz

Hi, Liz. I’m not sure. What happens exactly? Does it just quit? If you turn on debug mode, do you get an error?

Oh cool – I wasn’t aware there was a debug mode. I will give that a shot.

Here is an example page I was trying to bring in:
    http://opal-ink.com/AboutJonestown/PersonalReflections/splash_johnvmoore.html

It got to the “ just before In Search of Truth… and then it just stopped converting the rest of the page. The Importer kept going though, importing other pages, so overall its a HUGE (I mean HUGE) help. Its happened for other characters too, like umlaute’s and accented vowels.

I will let you know what the debug mode says. Its a good first step :-).

    Thanks!

    Hi there!

I finally had some time to try this – and it did give me an error message:

Notice: Undefined index: import_images in /home/content/86/7975786/html/ElizabethShaules/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/import-html-pages/html-importer.php on line 988

Notice: Undefined index: import_documents in /home/content/86/7975786/html/ElizabethShaules/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/import-html-pages/html-importer.php on line 990

Do they mean anything to you?

    Thank you!

Yes, but notices are just minor errors. I’ll fix them, but they don’t have anything to do with your special character problem. Thanks for checking, though! I’ll take a look at the file you linked when I get a chance — I’m on deadline for my book, alas, but I’ll try.

No worries, I appreciate all your efforts!

FYI, if I do a major search and replace and convert all the special characters on my own to proper HTML code, I don’t get any errors. Its just when you are working on a 5k+ page site…you reallllyyy don’t want to do a big search and replace like that if you can help it, lol.

    Thank you!

Too true! I’ll definitely work on it, but does that mean you’ve solved the immediate problem? Because if I can put this off for another ten days, that would be awesome.

Yes, I know how to work around it in long form. So schedule it in when it works best for you :-).
