    Thanks for your time.

I just created a staging site that is password protected. The staging site was made through my hosting’s (Bluehost) staging site service. It seems to have installed it as a subdirectory under my live site.

Prior to making the staging site, my live site already had Wordfence installed on it

I’m wondering if I need to install Wordfence on the staging site (I’m not a premium user by the way).

    And if I do:

I see on the staging site that wordfence is prompting this message: If you have separate WordPress installations with Wordfence installed within a subdirectory of this site, it is recommended that you perform the Firewall installation procedure on those sites before this one.

Is there a certain way I should install and set up the wordfence firewall on the staging site given this message?

    Thanks

    Hi @andyjay83,

The message you mention is for when you’re running multiple WordPress installations in child folders of your main website. Some people may do this where they run a WordPress website and then a /blog subdirectory has a totally separate WordPress installation (just as one example). If your staging site is totally separate to your live site and only has WordPress installed once, this doesn’t apply to you.

If your staging site prompts a password in the browser when visiting, it’s likely that communications where our server attempts to connect back to yours for Wordfence scans etc. will fail. This can cause errors or alerts to be triggered so it may be in your best interests to not install Wordfence there, but it’s feasible the plugin without scheduled scans, email alerts and firewall optimization could work for you.

We have a small section of documentation regarding migration here which you may find helpful if you do decide to install Wordfence on the staging site before transferring to live: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/remove-or-reset/#migrate-with-wordfence

Removing firewall optimization is recommended prior to migrating or cloning, so not optimizing on your staging site will mean this part is already in a migration-ready state.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

So with my setup, essentially I could dismiss the prompt from Wordfence on my staging site and should NOT optimize the firewall on my staging site, correct?

    That is correct @andyjay83.

If you have any further questions or issues once you make the migration, by all means start a new topic and we’ll always be glad to help out. I would imagine with no optimization prior to the go-live, things should run smoothly for you though.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
