• hi. I’m fairly new to WordPress and website building in general but over the past few months I have been learning everything I can and experimenting with playground etc.

we are a small business, and our current website needs a lot of work. My boss originally paid a large sum of money to a developer to build the site and then pays a monthly fee for its management except it isn’t being managed. Any calls or requests don’t come into effect for months and are often not what we asked for when they do. We have decided to manage the website ourselves and I’m confident I can do this. BUT the developers built the site around their own theme using the classic editor and we want to use the block editor. If we were to migrate the site to somewhere like Hostinger for example, how would we change the theme to a block theme without breaking the site? I’m thinking it might just be easier to start fresh as there’s a lot that needs changing anyway. If we go down that route, how to I move our domain name to the new site? Can I build the site first then move the domain to limit down time? Any help or advice would be very welcome

    thank you

Unfortunately, without knowing the individual theme, it is impossible to answer this question. Even if the classic editor is used there, there may be settings and formatting that cannot be transferred. Even transferring only the content could be difficult or impossible.

To clarify this, you would need to take a closer look at the current individual theme. If you are unable to do this yourself, I would recommend hiring someone to do it. Yes, there are also good developers out there. You can certainly find many of them here: https://jobs.wordpress.net

The alternative would still be to set everything up completely from scratch. You could at least transfer existing content via copy & paste. This would probably be less time-consuming, but it also depends on the size of the website.

thank you for replying. It’s not massive, 6-8 pages + woo commerce so we will probably start again from scratch. How would I move our domain name over to the new site?

To do this, you need to contact your host’s support team. They will be able to tell you how to assign the domain of the new website in their systems. In WordPress, you then only need to change the setting for the main domain, see: https://developer.ww.wp.xz.cn/advanced-administration/upgrade/migrating/#changing-the-site-url
