• Just one point and then I’ll go away for good. User background: no knowledge of writing or using code, but I do have a website and a host whose basic functions I use. WordPress bills itself as easy. But I got stuck at the latter part of step 2:

    Installation: Famous 5-minute install
    1. Unzip the package in an empty directory.
    2. Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details.

My web host does not provide any information that looks anything remotely like what’s in these instructions. And even if it did, where in the world do I actually enter it, and what would I do with it even if I could?

Like practically all instructions devised by computer people, this is really easy IF YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO IT.

No aspersions to the originators of WordPress, who give their work away for free. But really, this simple point has been unintelligible to the code and computer-help people for about two decades now.

I’m deleting the whole thing from my system now. You’ll never hear from me again.

  • well did you do step 2? If you did you would know those details

Step 2 Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.

this might sound like a stupid question but what does unzip mean in the computer world? I’m just starting this type of thing thanks.

    definition

basically a file or files are zipped to compress them and make the file(s) smaller – usually for downloading

if you have windows xp or vista, you should be able to double click a zip and the file(s) will be extracted to normal size

I’m wondering – might the “Famous 5-minute install” be named “Famous” because I’ve spent already something like 5 hours on trying to install WordPress?

OK. I read over the Step 2 again and suddenly I got enlightened:
    1. I have to log in my web server administration page on host’s site.
    2. There I have to create MySQL database.
    3. And there I get the name of MySQL database un set up the password which are used for setting up the wp-config.php file.

After that it’s truly no more than 5 minutes and the WordPress IS installed.
