starting/stopping columns

Why can I only start then stop 1 block of columns on a page. If I try to start a new block of columns, it hides the content. For example, start columns, column 1=image, column 2=caption, stop columns and run description under both columns. Then I want to do it again with new image/caption/description, but it wont let me. Suggestions?
