Where is Storefront announcements published nowadays?
Good question! You might want to check this GitHub page: https://github.com/woocommerce/storefront/releases
It’s not as pretty, but it definitely has the most up-to-date information on Storefront releases.

Any idea why these dev-announcements are not written anymore? Using childthemes in a couple of places and think they are quite valuable.

I’ve heard back from the developers, and the reason they’ve stopped doing release posts like the one you linked to is that the recent “changes” to Storefront have mostly been fixes, and not new features.
So, in this case, the best place really to get information on Storefront updates would be from its GitHub release page.
