Hey @ajphoto!
Great question! It looks like you are in the new native Gutenberg editor, and the HTML code above is a simple code content block. You can easily remove it and rewrite it in Gutenberg: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/gutenberg/ and https://wpengine.com/blog/gutenberg-for-beginners-a-basic-tutorial/
Let us know if it helps!
Warm regards
Thanks for that very prompt reply! I don’t really want to rewrite anything if I have to. I had been working since 6 am this morning on an article in the standard visual builder and just before I finished I wanted to include a mailto link at the bottom so I clicked on html editor in the tool bar.
Now I just want to be able to switch OUT of the html editor.
Do I have to rewrite it all now or is there a button I can press to get out of the html editor?
It does not seem to be in the html editor now but I still see html code:

Thanks again!

@ajphoto hmm I understand the frustration.
If you go on the page (not the editing section), does it render correctly? If so you could just copy the whole page and paste it into Gutenberg, it’s quite smart and should auto-format the majority of content for you.
You can also click the 3 dots next to the code block (in the editor) and press “Convert to blocks” – like described here: https://joshuaotwell.com/convert-existing-html-to-gutenberg-block-with-examples/
I aslo see that you have Elementor installed, perhaps if you click “Edit with Elementor” things will look more familiar once again?
Warm regards!

Hi there, yes on the front end it did render correct. I just cannot get my head around the idea that I cannot switch back.
Do you maybe have advise on what to do to prevent this from happening again?
Thanks for the heads up, I made a new post, copied the old one and pasted into new post (also had to coopy over all my Yoast settings for that post),
Massive thanks, Andy
My pleasure Andy!
The most likely thing that happened was that WordPress was updated on your website to a newer version. This could have happened automatically or manually. In WordPress, they switched to using Gutenberg as their editor, hence why the change happened on your side.
The “Edit with Elementor” button wasn’t it, was it?
The Elemntor editor loaded like a front end editor, certainly not what I expected.
Stay safe!
Hmm well then that’s not it :D!
It does take a while to get used to, but Gutenberg is very powerful. This guide will help you explore the functionalities in this editor 🙂 https://ww.wp.xz.cn/gutenberg/

I’m having a similar problem. But only on one page. Mine does not look exactly like the link from above. I don’t know how to send you a link to the editing image of my page but here is a link to the page on my site. https://autoimmuneroots.com/my-food/food-symptom-diary/. It happened when I switched to HTML to embed a link to a google spreadsheet. Now I can’t get back to regular visual editing. The page looks fine on my site. It is just stuck in this mode & the menu bar that allowed me to switch back & forth is gone. Other posts are fine when I edit them. It is just this post.
