when i turn off maintenance mode all the styling/images etc on my my site is lost and ony the basic text is displayed. I have a generate press site installed.

It’s server-side cache. Try this and the page opens without problems https://theedinburghdecorators.co.uk/?nocache

Make sure you empty the cache in both WP and on your server depending on what caching mechanism you’re using.
