Sub categories didn’t work

I tried to set up sub categories by clicking on post; categories; add new; gave it a title; chose the parent category in the drop down menu.

Instead, I get these subcategories listed as parent categories on my blogsite, while the parent category is not listed at all. What did I do wrong?
