subdirectory installation

Goodmornig! I need some help

So, there is a website already running from a subdirectory and points to the root by modifying the index file.

Now, this website needs to be updated and i have to do it from scratch because lot of things have to be changed.

What i did is: install the new wordpress to another subfolder(as a test until move on root), create a new database (but i import the old one), change the wp-config file with the right db details and finally change the siteurl from phpmyadmin.

Somewhere there is a mistake because nothing works, so what did i do wrong?

Depending on the version of the old WP,

KEEP IN MIND

that database ( DB ) structure often changes between versions. The implication is that, for example, one cannot import a pre 4x database into a 4x install and expect it to work. You need to install your original version of WordPress, import your db dump and then start upgrading.

Hello again!

My first attempt was a clean installation of wordpress to a subfolder (no upgrades).
By doing that i would have the official website running (from a subfolder which points to root) and simultaneously run another wordpress site (the test) from a different subfolder (each one has its own db).

All i got was a white page with no content 🙁

Then, i tried to transfer this new site from my localhost but i had a db issue (#1273 – Unknown collation: ‘utf8mb4_unicode_ci’).

(I know it is messed up but this site was my very first one so i didn’t know much about these things and now i am trying to make it right.)

If you are having trouble transferring a site from localhost to the web (or anywhere) try using Duplicator. It is an awesome time saving plugin made primarily for devs, so it is expected that you have at least basic WP knowledge.

I wholeheartedly agree with @keithdriscoll. Duplicator works very well for transferring sites. Has worked flawlessly everytime I used it.

Well try to alter the database in the phpmyadmin. I was working for http://www.digitalharbor.com and the same thing happened. I checked the wp-options table and found out that there are some links which were targeting the old path. So I just changed all of them to http://www.digitalharbor.com/ and the site woks fine now.hope that it helps 🙂
