I am new to WordPress and have limited knowledge but trying to learn. I have set a a WordPress multisite as per the instructions. I have added a wildcard subdomain in Cpanel as per the instructions. I add a subdomain via network admin. I get a blank site (no name) under my main site. When I go to my subdomain I get the “Error establishing database connection”. So far I have spent hours online trying to find an answer. I have contacted my host provider, so far no answer. I could add another independent WordPress install. However, I want to get this one to work. Any help greatly appreciated. My wordpress install is in root.

  • Same problem here. Installation from scratch…

Did you follow the instructions to configure a subdomain network? Sounds like you are missing steps:

I did everything as per the instructions 3 times now. Deleting everything and starting again. I add the subdomain via network admin, I get an email saying it has been added. Under my sites I see my main domain and another site that has no name. If I select visit site of the “no name” domain it takes me to my main domain. If I go into my sites under network log in and select the subdomain site and select edit and then the link to my subdomain I get the error message. On info panel for the subdomain Domain is my subdomain, Path shows / with nothing after that. I’m going crazy trying to figure it all out. I’m starting to think it is something to do with my website host. Oh I manually installed WordPress.

I’m in the same situation as CaptainClive. Repeated the steps as well several times. Played around with defining subdomains with my hoster.

One question that I’m not sure (readiung through various posts): multisite with subdomains is not expected to create any files somwhere on the filesystem, or is it?

Having the same issue with wordpres, and I’m no noob.
Having set up several mu blogs in the past, it looks like this is a bug with wp 4.2.

In my case it’s with subdirectories…

Anyone having a solution for that?

Thanks a lot for forwaring the solution. The solution (adding the missing collate type 'utf8mb4_unicode_ci' in wp_config.php) worked perfectly.
