Domain mapping works the same for subfolder & subdomain sites.

and will this work even with SSL?

Yes as long as you have the right certificate type.

Does it matter whether I use www or not on the multisite’s native domain?

    No.

If this is a new installation consider using the arbitrary domain feature included in WP core instead of the DM plugin.

Unfortunately I can’t find any explanations on how to use the native domain mapping feature you mention. Could you point me to something?

Go to Network Admin -> Sites -> Edit Site on the site you want to change the URL.

I found it. So I put the external TLD as “Siteurl”, keep the network URL as “Home”, and point the external TLD’s A-Record to my network’s IP address and that will do the job nothing else required?

Why do you want to do this? My recommendation is that you change the site so it lives at the mapped domain URL.
