Thanks. I can now see the issue: your theme already has a mega menu system built in which conflicts with Max Mega Menu. My advice would be to keep your theme menu as it will be difficult to strip out and replace, and use Max Mega Menu if you ever build your site with a different theme in the future.
If you did want to try and get Max Mega Menu working, it will require editing your theme files directly. I do not know your level of experience, but you’ll need to be fairly adept at modifying theme files to do this, and we have a guide here:

Hi Tom: I changed all back for now so i have a working menu. Yes the theme has it too but without controls for the menu i need (spacing between the submenu items, etc.). now a strange thing…the site below is a clone with same theme and max mega menu works fine. how can this be then? I think i have another site or two too…same thing…they work fine:
