Subscriber role

i would like users registered with the subscriber role to get en email when there is a new post. There seem to be plenty of plugins to let people subscribe to such an email, but that doesn’t make them USERS. Or with the meta widget, they can become a user with the default SUBSCRIBER role, but as far as I can tell this doesn’t get them an email update. Ideas?
