Successfully installed & published WP, but errors & questions

I wish I had tried out WP before now, but better late than never!
I have my own website, photography based (at least it will be whenever I finally get done with it!), that I am now making live again, after a couple years absence of not having one up. In the past, I have always used RealMac’s RapidWeaver to author and create my websites in the past decade, here on my Mac, but it is limited and it just all got on my nerves enough to finally look elsewhere.
So, over the past weekend, I installed WP 3.1.1 successfully on my server, and have configured it to be of similar design and look I had been going with in my RW creation and design of my site… and transferred what little content I have gotten up in past month, between creating and designing the website, and am very pleased with what WP offers automatically in way of organization and presentation.
I am encountering one major error, and do have a couple questions though:
First the error – Static Page. It annoyingly just brings up an ‘Index of’ directory page. I have tried to correct this, but have just failed miserably, and don’t know how or what to do make it do what it is suppose to do.
Here are my site’s particulars:
http://www.AnAmateurPhotographer.org
WP is installed under –
http://www.AnAmateurPhotographer.org/Journal
Which if you try to access just that, it also opens that annoying directory page.
I created two pages, one titled ‘Main’ to be the page that lists the recent posts, and that is working fine. The second page, ‘About’, I made the “static” page, and that is what goes to the ‘Index of’ directory. What do I need to do to remedy this?
One thing I have quickly noticed with WP, is the hundred million files that it has contained within it, and trying to find where something may be… yeah, that has been an exhaustive and fun search 🙂 I have noticed that it has like a hundred (ok, a slight exaggeration) ‘index.php’ files located throughout it, a couple i have found, when opening them, just read “silence is golden” … WTF?! Anyway, could the number of those be the culprit, in that there only needs to be one, and there are these scores of them?
And I’ll just post one question – the nice little navigational links to lead the visitor to either the previous or next post, I would prefer them be after the post at the bottom, and not right there directly above the post’s title. I can see in the ‘single.php’ code (at least I think I am reading and understanding the code to be describing so), the ‘div id’ that is talking about those links, and it shows “nav-above” and then below, the title, meta, content, etc., below those, a “nav-below”… and to my ignorant assessment, means that those nav links can either be placed at the top or bottom… but, I just can’t find and figure out how to make it be at the bottom. I am sure it’s just a simple changing of one little thing, but just where that one little thing is located in the code, I don’t know. In my ignorance, I tried just deleting the “nav-above” div, but, naturally that didn’t make it default to the “nav-bottom” then working, but, of course, just completely eliminated the nav links altogether.
Anyway, any guidance and pointing me to directions, to help me in either of these early fixes, I would be most grateful, and thank you upfront for whatever assistance you may lend.
Again, I am brand spankin’ new to the whole WP world, and so far, am liking what I see, and wish I had converted a long time ago! I look forward to eventually, having my full website just done through WP!
Oh, that is one other quick thing – where in tarnations are all of my published posts files?! I look on my server for them, but see nothing at all of the seven posts on there anywhere… where are they? Or even the two pages for that matter… where are those? Where are they kept at?
Okay, thank you, very, very much (for just reading this far… if you have!) 🙂
