Autoptimize has been amazing plugin from all the time where we have page cache enabled from server side and want to optimize js css html from the WordPress.

However, I see that the plugin supports PHP 5.6 where WordPress core itself doesn’t support upto 7.1 and upcoming 6.9 is said to be compatible with PHP 7.4+. So, it should be at-least same with Autoptimize where it has almost 1 million active users.

Besides, using newer php code is said to be good for performance and security.

well, at least technically & theoretically it is perfectly possible for AO to be backwards-compatible up until PHP 5.6 whereas WordPress core is not. indeed AO’s codebase is pretty stable and although I have removed unit tests for PHP 5.6 it is pretty likely that still works. that being said, as I don’t do automated tests on PHP < 7.3 any more, I should probably change that “minimum PHP version” string sometime .. 😉

    enjoy your weekend!
