switchable variants

Hi,
on product page I would like to Switch between attributes sets in e.g. t-shirt, longsleeve, custom fields. Options I can imagine:
1. make attribute for product type and choose t-shirt etc. the following attributes like color would be available based on variants. I have many attributes, how to quickly do that?
2. any coding to put teh variable attributes into?
