Hello, I am about to update a clients website. They already have a live WordPress site and I have purchased a new theme (academica pro) which I have already installed.

I will need to place the site in maintenance mode during the modifications, however as I won’t be completing everything in one hit, I was wondering if I switched back to their original theme and turn the maintenace mode off, the site would run a s normal, then after a couple days go back in and reactive the new theme (in maintenance mode) and continue editing then perform the same task over a period of time so the site doesn’t stay in maintenance mode for too long.

Will this affect anything on the site, will the new theme settings remain intact if I keep switching between them?

    Any advice would be great.

    Kind regards
    Mark

Yes, each theme’s settings are stored in the database. However, I have occasionally had widgets moved to the “Inactive Widgets” area when switching to a new theme, so you might want to check for that after switching back. Also, I find it best to deactivate all plugins and use a default WordPress theme such as Twenty Twelve or Twenty Thirteen while doing a core update.
