one more question – will people using the old URL (with wordpress in it) be able to get to the new web site? thx.
Export from the .com file using the “WordPress” option and you get a WXR formatted file.
Import that file into your .org blog and you’ll get all your posts, comments, categories and tags just as they were on the old site.
You can use any theme your heart desires on a self-hosted blog. Same with plugins. For starters, see the “Extend” section of this site or use your favorite web search engine to look for more.
Stags: Tons of plugins and options. Again, search the Extend area and these forums for ideas (one of the options is a plugin provided by the WordPress.com folks that is similar to what you’re used to.) I personally just add the snippet of code for Google Analytics to my themes.
The final question: no auto-forwarding, but you could certainly leave a final post up there (on your old .com site) with the new address 🙂
Hope that helps a bit.

that’s helpful. Thank you!
although I don’t know all the lingo… (wxr ) but I understand the result.
It seems like it’ll be a lot of work so I’d like to simplify as much as possible.
If I have a post on my blog that I then want to move into a new “section” will it also import new URL’s for each blog post so that I can move them as appropriate?
I’m not familiar with google analytics. I’m very much a newbie but I’ll look into it.
I could also just leave it as a .com blog and still change the URL I guess. I didn’t think of that. I wanted to make it a more fully functioning web site with many categories and pages that didn’t seem as easy to do in .com.
Thanks much!
Cathryn.
