• I want to switch my WP theme. Unfortunately it may take me days or weeks to get the new theme set up the way I like. The preview button on the themes page is fabulous, but it does not allow you to save the work you’ve done. It only allows you to save and activate.

Is there an easy way that I can develop my new theme and then when I’m finished with it, just flip the switch for it to go to my live site?

I’ve even tried copying my entire site to a subdomain but that is starting to seem like more work than I am bargaining for since I have many different plug ins with options/settings.

Thanks ahead of time for the reply

  • You shouldn’t need all your plugins or content to be all the same, just to configure a new theme. Why would it take days?
Use your copy of your site to test out the new theme, setting all the options in the Customizer the way you prefer. Then use a Customizer Export Import plugin to save the theme options and load them into your live site.

One thing to be careful of though is any images you use in theme options. Those will have the subdomain address and not the live address. Make sure the plugin you use clears this up (or don’t use images in theme options or fix them yourself).

The Customizer feature of saving a draft of your options is great, but it doesn’t really work when it’s for a different theme than the one that is active.

Thanks. It will take me a while to set up a new theme. I will need to create new images, etc. and I also have a hard time making up my mind sometimes.

I have a lot of settings such as Woocommere and Paypal settings that I don’t won’t to lose or have to set it up again.

Those plugin settings (and those plugins) don’t affect the theme or its options. That’s the beauty of themes: you should be able to switch at any time.
