• I currently have a blog on wordpress.com that I would like to eventually move to a ww.wp.xz.cn blog that I control. I initially thought I would make the switch quickly, because a podcast plugin and the simplepress forum plugin are important to me long term.

But I have been hesitant to pull the trigger and make the switch. #1, there is the pain in the neck of making the switch. But, more importantly, over on the wordpress.com forum I have had people tell me that they moved their blogs to ww.wp.xz.cn, only to move it back to wordpress.com later.

They said that being part of the wordpress.com community raises you in the search engine rankings, and in turn helps build a loyal readership.

So I am struggling with what to do. Should I stick with wordpress.com until I have enough readers that are willing to follow me over? Or should I do it right from the start and sooner I move to ww.wp.xz.cn the better?

It is a tough decision. Your two cents will be appreciated…

  • There are some advantages to being on WordPress.com. It is a large community and it might be easier to find new readers. You also don’t have to hassle with hosting and maintenance.

But if you want to get into podcast, hosting your own WordPress site will give you the freedom to add features you might need.

I would say, stick it out on WordPress.com as long as you can. Less hassles and more readers, and when you need to switch, you’ll probably know even more about WordPress and be ready to make the jump.

However, knowing that you don’t want to stay on WordPress.com forever, plan ahead! If you don’t already have one, get your own domain name, and map that to your WordPress.com blog. Then down the road when you switch to your own site, if you keep the permalink structure the same, all of your old links will still work and it will be a seamless transition.
