Hello! I will try to reproduce this on my testing site and I’ll let you know what I find

I’m not sure I understand how it can happen.
I think I might have an idea of what happened, but I might be wrong.
Existing terms should be selected by typing and searching for the terms. If you added the term through the “add new taxonomy” button, that will add a new term, and unless you chose a parent for this term, the term will have no parent.
Was this term added to the post through the “add new” button?

No sorry, selected from the drop-down list.

I cannot find a proper description of the New Post Terms and the Post Categories Fields on the widget. Could it be that I need to set these?
Hello Pete. The New Post Terms is if you want to control which terms your post will be linked to. If you want your users to choose, you use the post categories or post tags field.
If you need custom taxonomies or want more control over the layout of the fields, then use a custom ACF field and turn on “save terms”.
I’m looking into the issue to see why this might be happening to you, sir.

OK, well I have got custom terms via the regions and places.
Again, is this the problem. I don’t want these to be changed, but you suggested that I had to load and save them.

Pete
I’m going to need some more information to understand what you are trying to do: you are letting you users add posts and you need these terms automatically saved to the post? correct me if I am mistaken

Yes, I have a custom post with 3 taxonomies, Region/Place, Employment Sector and Occupation.
The Region/Place is a hierarchy with places within regions. The other 2 are non hierarchical. The Regions/Places cannot be added to, nor can the Sectors. The Occupations can be added to by the user .

Any news on this, were you able to reproduce it?
Unfortunately I was not able to reproduce the issue. Can you send me login details so that I can take a look for myself.
By the way, is this happening with other taxonomies?

As I said, this is the only taxonomy with parent child structure.

You should have login details now

I think this is ACF and not your plugin, unless you are modifying ACF. If you change the family location on the backend it shows the taxonomy out of the hierarchy so I can’t see it’s your problem.
My plugin doesn’t modify ACF in the backend. The taxonomy field, in particular, is basically all ACF whereas the other fields I added extra functionality to.
I am not having the issues you’re having though, so perhaps there is a conflict with whatever plugin you are using for custom taxonomies… CPT UI, is that correct?
