Template formatting

We are trying to get the slider setup so that it has the image, then the title under the image, then the excerpt under that. Is there a way to do that? it also looks like the excerpt character limit is not working. The other idea that we had was to, on mouseover, a black bar at the base of the image slides up with the title and the excerpt, or the title showing and mouseover it slides up and displays the excerpt. Are any of those possible with the current controls or are we going to need to do something special to get it to work?
