Sorry to hear you are not happy with the way Smush is set up. We’ve compressed billions of images (that is not an exaggeration). In order to maintain this service for free, we have to set limitations. As you can imagine, it is very expensive to process that many images.
The Smush plugin is an interface that interacts with our compression servers. You can check with your host to find out if they would provide you a free image compression service so the images can stay localized. Best of luck!
That makes no sense, either. It wouldn’t be expensive if you didn’t offload them to your server, which still makes no sense if you’re trying to limit bandwidth.
Sorry, you are unable to understand. We can not install a compression tool on your server. That is why the images are sent to our servers and returned to yours. It is not bandwidth that is the issue it is server resources and server integration. This goes beyond the scope of a WordPress plugin. Best of luck in your search for a self-hosted compression tool for WordPress.
