Terrible Line Breaks
-
The line breaks in Ryu are terrible! Even worse on mobile. The copy sometimes looks so awful, because of the lines so randomly breaking, that I consider switching the theme.
Is this a known issue? Is there anything, I can do? Maybe I’m missing something?
This is the URL: http://xsxm.de/
Again: Especially on mobile! It’s just awful. Please help.
Best,
Chris.

Hi Chris, could you explain in more detail what the problem is with the line breaks on your site so I can investigate further? I looked at your site from large to small screen sizes, but I’m not seeing any randomness in the line breaks.
Could you upload a screenshot to help in troubleshooting?
Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library, and provide a link so I can see it, or upload it with a service like Imgur or Snaggy. Thanks!
Hey Kathryn,
thank you for taking the time. Maybe it’s my iPhone 6? When I look at posts on it, lines break like this (example first post on site):
“Ein Jahr Aethervox Ehrenfeld
Podcast. Ein Jahr motzen über
Familie
Schwein. Außerdem: Sonntagsprogramm,
Fremdenfeindlichkeit,
Lieblingsmärchen,
Zukunftspläne, Apple Service,
Verpixelungsrecht,
Käsekuchen und Cecil der Löwe.Show us some love:

Thank you, for looking at it,
best,
Chris.
Thanks for the screenshot, that’s helpful.
I’m not able to recreate those strange breaks, even when copy-pasting your content into my test site running Ryu.
Have you made any CSS changes to the theme? If so, can you undo them temporarily and see if that helps?
Another troubleshooting step is to temporarily deactivate all your plugins. Does the problem persist? If the problem is gone, reactivate your plugins one-by-one, checking your site again in between each, to find the conflict.
Actually, before you do that, I think we’ve found the culprit. Looks like there are some non-breaking spaces in your post content causing the unexpected line breaks. For example:
Ein Jahr motzen über Familie Schwein. Außerdem: Sonntagsprogramm, Fremdenfeindlichkeit, Lieblingsmärchen, Zukunftspläne, Apple Service, Verpixelungsrecht, Käsekuchen und Cecil der Löwe.Try switching to your Text/HTML editor and removing those non-breaking spaces. That should fix the issue. Let me know how it goes!
p.s. I am only able to see these characters using the Chrome browser inspector – they didn’t show up in the Firefox inspector or in the browser source, which is why I didn’t notice them before.
That’s crazy. I always use Chrome and this is how the post looks like in the html/text editor:
“…
Jeden verdammten Donnerstag: Gossip, Rants und Lebenshilfe. Diesmal wieder aus Köln und Berlin.
Mit Christian und Dominic.Ein Jahr Aethervox Ehrenfeld Podcast. Ein Jahr motzen über Familie Schwein. Außerdem: Sonntagsprogramm, Fremdenfeindlichkeit, Lieblingsmärchen, Zukunftspläne, Apple Service, Verpixelungsrecht, Käsekuchen und Cecil der Löwe.

BTW, I only have four plugins, that I use. I fear, that everything will be gone, when I deactivate them. For example, when I deactivate my Podlove Podcast-Plugin, will all my previous episodes (show up as posts) be gone? I know, these questions are probably naive… Also, only minor changes in the CSS have been done. I’ll ask the guy who did those.
Best,
Chris.
I’m really wondering, why it looks good on all your devices, if there is some issue with the CSS or a plugin. Shouldn’t you see those terrible line breaks as well?!?
Here’s a screenshot of the Chrome inspector:
If you right-click and choose “Inspect Element” you should see it.
Even if you can’t see the non-breaking spaces in your WP post editor, they are still there somehow. Could you try removing and re-inserting the spaces in the editor?
Did you paste your post content from somewhere else, like an email or word processor? Extra formatting may have been carried over from there.
Note that I am seeing the break at desktop size in the above screenshot, so it’s not size-specific.
You can leave your plugins at the moment as I’m suspecting another culprit, as I mentioned above.
