I’ve put in my keys, and bucket name, saved changes, and clicked the Test S3 Settings button.
The button text changes to “Testing S3 Settings…” and just stays like that.
The network tab of devTools reveals that there is no response from the server, until it eventually gives a 504 Gateway Time-out.

I should mention that locally backing up functions perfectly.

Another thing to mention: I created a non-admin IAM user in S3 with the policy that was suggested in the UpdraftPlus FAQ. I tested that user’s capability by uploading and downloading a file to the bucket with the aws cli, and it worked. That user is the one I’m using for Updraft, and it’s ID and Key are the ones in the WP settings.

How long until this message appears, in seconds?

If it’s more than about 10, then it’s likely that your webserver has an outgoing firewall, that blocks it from contacting Amazon S3 – for that, you’d need to talk to your web hosting company.
