text in welcome.php area

    big time novice here. was wondering how i can simply enter text into the welcome.php/sidebar area of wordpress. i can easily load images, but can text be used in order to not use an outside program for designing such as photoshop?
    thanks in advance.
    the problem i have currently is text entered in this area appears like it’s a link (with words being blue then yellow and underlined when moused over)

    You can put plain text into any part of your theme you want to. If you want to put it in the sidebar, it may be easier for you to use the text widget.
