text on images plugin?

Hello all,

Last time I used wp was 2004 and now I’d like to make a new blog/magazine/shop kinda thing so I’m checking to see if there are new solutions to old problems.
The content would be 80% photography 20% text, so I’m trying to see if there are plugins to place text anywhere on an image and format it without having to do that with photoshop, which would make that text invisible to search engines, and too small to view on mobile devices.

I guess that what I’m looking for is something like 22slides portfolio theme like this for example: http://www.asmith.photography/ for the category tiled layout and the horizontal scrolling in gallery view, but something more elaborate than the classic overlay band with text that appears on rollover.

That would allow to use horizontal scrolling not just for portfolios, but for as magazine-style layout.
