Try using Firefox with the Firebug add-on for this kind of CSS work.
http://getfirebug.com/

And consider creating a child theme for your CSS changes or using a custom CSS plugin.

For the Background texture you have to have a texture that is tileable and when you upload it using custom backgrounds check the tile checkbox.
