Don’t understand why there is such a delay between comments being approve and them appearing on the front of the site with and without Jetpack Comments. Maybe the delay is so long in the comment being displayed that by the time it shows up, the edit timer has already expired?
Can you try disabling SCE and see if that fixes the time delay?

Gave it a shot with SCE turned off and from approving the comment in the backend, it took about a minute to show up on the front end. Doesn’t seem like disabling SCE helped. Turning it back on results in the same behavior.
I think there is something wonky going on with the comment form between the comment being submitted and actually being shown on the frontend.
I’m guessing here, but I wonder if it’s an Akismet issue…

I just turned off Akismet and submitted another test comment. The page refreshes as if the comment has been accepted (on the backend it has) but it doesn’t show up. I need to refresh the page again for the comment to be displayed. I still don’t see an edit comment link either.

There is something definitely wrong with the commenting system on the site. I’m going to have the tech guy look into it to see what he can determine. Maybe it’s not SCE’s fault after all.
Yeah, since there is no comment posted, SCE can’t hook into comment_posted action, therefore no magical cookie, and no editing of comments.

Just wanted to give you an update. It looks like there is some aggressive cacheing going on with our BlueHost account the Tavern is using. We’re working on addressing the issue so that new comments from logged out users refresh the cache instead of them seeing the cached page. I think that’s what’s causing the Simple Comment Editing issues.
Yeah, very aggressive caching. I just left another comment and I’m still waiting for it to appear.
Not having the comment show up right away is bad UX, and then since the comment doesn’t show up at all, I’m thinking either it got lost in oblivion or it was marked as spam.
Let me know if you need help working with your host on this. I know a few guys that would be willing to take a look and are very experienced with caching.

Our tech guy is looking into it. He needs to investigate the aggressive caching on Bluehost. Hoping to have a fix in place before WCSF as you described the exact user experience people are having and we don’t want.
Jeff,
I notice your comments are appearing instantly now. SCE still isn’t working though.
If you have time, can you create a password-protected page with comments enabled and let me test some things?
Just e-mail me the page / pass.
Thanks!
