Hi guys, I’m hoping a patient individual can talk me through the process of setting up the ‘purchasing’ process of my new course. The website isn’t live yet.

I have created my course on a WordPress website using LifterLMS and have the full structure, just need to add a way to pay / access the course.

I’m using the PayPal plugin (WP Express Checkout) and I’ve added the shortcode to my sales page / course.

I’m struggling to visualise how this will work when live once the purchase is made and I feel like I need explicit step-by-step instructions on what happens once the PayPal purchase is complete. Are users directed back to the course / sales page to complete the course? If so, I imagine they will still see the sales text and PayPal shortcode which obviously isn’t ideal.

Is it the case that if I used LifterLMS’s Access Plan then that Buy / plan section would disappear from the page once redirected back? I can’t use that as I don’t want to use their Purchase page.

Really can’t see what will happen / how to have customers pay for the course and then be redirected back to the course, this time with no prompt to pay.

If anyone has the time to post step by step instructions of how to ‘structure’ the payment process for an online course, I’d be really grateful. I have googled the hell out of this and read so many pages / LifterLMS articles but nothing I have read is descriptive enough.

    Something like:

    1. Add WP Express to your sales page
    2. Set redirect here…
    3. Check PayPal redirects to…
    4. Amend / Add shortcode here…
    5. Client will click here…
    6. Then client will see the sales page albeit without…

That’s how I need information – no steps left out!

Thanks in advance (total novice, first website with a course I have set up).

  • Hi @wordpressedfortime

    Thanks for reaching out!

Unfortunately, we are not familiar with WP Express. This isn’t a plugin we work with or integrate with so you will really want to reach out to WP Express’ support team for further help on the payments, redirects, and shortcode information.

We do know that because this is a third-party plugin it will not enroll users in a course or membership after purchase. The user has to go through the LifterLMS Access Plan to be enrolled or you as the admin would have to manually enroll them after payment.

One way you could do this is to create a custom sales page with the WP Express on it for checkout and then set all of the course access plans to free enrollment after this payment has been made. So, the first payment acts as the membership fee that grants users access to any of the courses by going in and enrolling. However, this would depend largely on the set up of your site and if you’re charging for each course individually or not.

The other option would be to use the manual payment gateway and have the manual payment option redirect to the WP Express page to make the payment. However, the downside of this set up would be that you still have to go into the user’s order and manually record the payment before the user can be enrolled. There is further information on this here: https://lifterlms.com/docs/using-lifterlms-manual-payment-gateway/

Essentially, for any enrollment after payment the student would need to purchase through the access plan set up in the course or membership. If this is done through a third party system, like a mailed check or a third party payment option then it requires the admin manually record the payment if using the manual payment gateway or manually enroll the student in the courses or membership.

We have a LifterLMS PayPal integration that works directly with the Access Plan system that is native to LifterLMS. There is some further information on this here if you’re interested: https://lifterlms.com/product/paypal-extension/

Please let us know what further questions you have!

    Hey,

Thanks for that – this is really helpful. It sounds like I need to manually enroll users who have paid once I can see their orders in the WP Express “Order” section.

I’m wondering… have you considered a 3-month free trial of your PayPal plugin for clients who are just starting out? I fully intend to look into automating the enrolment process and don’t mind paying for this as I do already get so much from the free version of your plugin – but until I know if my courses will sell, it’s just not an extra expense I can afford right now.

The reason I ask is because it would be helpful to be able to work out any kinks now rather than having to switch the payment process down the line.

But I’ll stick with manually enrolling for now and revisit this if and when I start making money.

    Thanks again,
