Just starting out with WordPress and after using several themes I’m finding that features I’d like are missing, e.g.

    1) Center align the menu
    2) add my own images to individual pages e.g. not just a coloured rectangle (plugins like WP Header Images don’t always work).

What is the typical way to achieve this?

Do I use the Theme Editor to change the code (will any updates overwrite these)?

Add additional CSS (how do I know what I can add)?

  • I would suggest using custom css and adding it under
    Appearance → Customize.

In general, you should be picking the most basic theme you can and then using a child theme to modify it with any design features you are looking for such as centered menus or header images.

There are page builders that will help with the header image thing too depending what exactly you are looking for with the header images.

When looking at plugins to add functionality you are looking for make sure the plugin is advertised to work with the current version of WordPress.

    Hope this helps.
