Where did you get the theme you’re trying to install? Have you followed their instructions? Often the zip you download contains the theme inside it, and is not meant to be uploaded directly. This is particularly common for ‘premium’ themes.

If the plugin is already there, you can use it or update it or delete it.

This can happen with an incomplete upload or update. I’ve had that happen on more than one occasion. If you are familiar with S/FTP programs, or even using your hosting company’s file manager, you can delete that folder
