Theme Modification.

I wondered if anyone could give me some advice..

I would like to modify a theme and I’m not sure where to begin. I have a fairly good knowledge of CSS and HTML and have worked using wordpress for about 6 years. But I work more in design than development

Essentially I would like to modify this. I would like the page to contain the three images – a navigation bar above and a scrollable bar to the left hand side. I would want the images to stay fixed and the bar to scrollable or the information in the bar to be scrollable.

Could anyone let me know how they would approach this.. or point me in the direction of a forum that can help? I know I could pay someone else to do this but I am quite keen on learning how to do this myself.
