Putting the template file responsive-portfolio-gallery.php in my theme directory does not seem to override the default version. Does this file need to be renamed or how do I override the template please?

responsive-portfolio-gallery.php is not a template file, it is the main file that makes everything work.

There is only one template file which is in the templates folder:
single-porfolio-item.php
