Theme updates/changes made easy?

One of the main things that we, as an agency, are asked to do, is to update a client’s theme to something newer, faster and more attractive.

Yet the process of developing a new theme alongside an existing one is just too complex. It involves using a third-party staging plugin or using a staging environment that the host may, or may not, supply. We do it. But it’s complicated and time-consuming and it flies in the face of the “simplicity” that WP touts.

I think it would be a great help to the WP community if the development of a new them alongside the existing one was written into the core WP code in the future.
