    Changed web designer to wordpress but when I open a ‘theme’ to customise, the old online version of the web page appears with no desktop ie appearance post, menu etc showing – so I can’t change anything on the old site

    I’m not sure what your specific problem is. If I understand correctly, you have a freshly installed WordPress and want to choose a theme from the themes available. Once you have chosen and activated a theme, you can also customize it. If it is a classic theme, you can do this via the Customizer; for modern themes, you can do this via the Site Editor.

    Thanks for your time,

    I have gone through over an hours worth of very good videos on this but they don’t have this problem.

    Website is [ redundant link deleted ]

    but it is built with Xara. I want to change. I have chosen ‘Education empowerment’ theme and customise.

    But all the desktop? links go and I am left with what you see below and my online site so everything stops.

    Any help appreciated

    Unfortunately, I don’t see any screenshots in your post. Do you have a link to the new WordPress website?

    Well no. I am trying to do a new wordpress website before publishing it but when I customise education ’empowerment theme’ which is shown as ‘active theme ‘ my old Xara online page comes up and all the controls from wordpress disappear except for

    Hero

    Bredacrumb

    Ah, now I see. You installed WordPress on the hosting where the files from the old website are located. You need to remove the files from the old website so that the WordPress website can be seen. To do this, you need to access the hosting via FTP and remove the files that belong to it – not the ones that belong to WordPress.

    Seems to work.

    I found a junk email from wp saying there was a blip in the system as well. So I have deleted all uploads and will have a fresh start.
