Changed web designer to wordpress but when I open a ‘theme’ to customise, the old online version of the web page appears with no desktop ie appearance post, menu etc showing – so I can’t change anything on the old site

I’m not sure what your specific problem is. If I understand correctly, you have a freshly installed WordPress and want to choose a theme from the themes available. Once you have chosen and activated a theme, you can also customize it. If it is a classic theme, you can do this via the Customizer; for modern themes, you can do this via the Site Editor.
