• I had blind faith in this plugin but we recently -after months running into huge, very huge server loads- discovered that WP better Security caused all these loads and complete dedicated server downtime (!!!) … A BIG BUG/ISSUE!

It seems that this is caused by the filecheck php file:
PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in …./wp-content/plugins/better-wp-security/inc/filecheck.php on line 55

Not sure yet but it may also have to do with some setting, I have other sites where there are no problems yet.

Have you looked at the FAQ page? This plugin’s author does have a note about your host.

    http://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/better-wp-security/faq/

    This part.

Will this work on all servers and hosts?

    • Better WP Security requires Apache or LiteSpeed and mod_rewrite or NGINX to work.
    • While this plugin should work on all hosts with Apache or LiteSpeed and mod_rewrite or NGINX it has been known to experience problems in shared hosting environments where it runs out of resources such as available CPU or RAM. For this reason it is extremely important that you make a backup of your site before installing on any existing site as, if you run out of resources during an operation such as renaming your database table, you may need your backup to be able to restore access to your site.
    • Finally, please make sure you have adequate RAM if you plan to use the file change detector of make large backups.

I am almost certain this has to do with the plugin itself and a problem with the htaccess file it is generating.
I already use the plugin quite a long time, on many sites and the same server but apparantly after an update of either the plugin and/or wp (not sure?) – this all started. Caused me hours and hours and many more hours to find out. 🙁

We have our own dedicated server, with plenty of ram so that should not be a problem as well. And again: it used to work fine. :-/
