I am trying to use it and for a single video with an api key enabled it is only showing a black background

Do you have “cache thumbnail locally” active? Does it work with that option unticked?

It does work without the cache thumbnail locally on the server. on my test server (MAMP) it works either way

OK, in that case it’s most likely an issue with directory (wp-content/cache/lyteThumbs) and file (in that directory) permissions, try playing around with those maybe?
