Thumbnail Size & Crop

I’m having a hard time getting the “featured image” thumbnail to crop to the correct area of each image I have selected as the “featured image”.

Even after I “edit image” and edit the “thumbnail only” and crop the image to the square proportion I want to show in the thumbnail grid of posts, it does not correctly show the area I have cropped in the “edit image” function. Please advise.
