Timeout when saving posts (Dreamhost, no Cloudflare)

    My client reported an issue with server timeouts when saving posts. I narrowed it down to two plugins: when Rank Math is enabled, it takes half a minute to save a post, when Proxy Cache Purge is enabled, it takes just under a minute, and when both are enabled, it times out after one minute. If neither is enabled, it takes about 5 seconds to save a post.

    I thought I would start by contacting Dreamhost tech support, but they just keep recommending general performance improvements. The site isn’t fast, but it’s working fine in general, and this issue with saving posts is reliably caused by these plugins being enabled and reliably fixed when they’re disabled. I saw you had a couple similar issues posted here recently and was hoping you could take a look. It’s ticket #9491607.

    I can try replacing Rank Math with a different SEO plugin, but I feel like we need to keep Proxy Cache Purge enabled, or else re-enable it just long enough to manually clear the cache every time we edit, so that’s not a great longterm solution.

    I personally recommend YoastSEO and use it with the plugin without issues. But that’s not the point here, and I get that.

    I noticed your Varnish IP address is not set to the IP of your server, which would absolutely impact the plugin’s ability to save (it’s trying to access an IP that it’s not…). The Varnish IP should match your server (you can check on https://www.whatsmydns.net/ and that IP should be the same).

    I’m going to reply in your ticket about it, so that’s kept private.

    Thank you so much!! I bet the IP changed when we upgraded plans a few weeks ago. Can’t believe it was such an easy fix.

    For whatever reason, changing that fixed the delay completely, and there’s no issues with Rank Math anymore. (We’d already been using Yoast before and having some performance issues, so I recently switched us over. In retrospect, it was probably just the server running out of memory and not Yoast specifically, but either way I’m happy not to have to switch plugins again.)

    Anyway, really appreciate your help with this!

    Yeah that tracks 🙂 I bet Rank Math is triggering multiple saves, and since each post save was trying to hit the wrong URL… Oy.

    I bet the IP changed when we upgraded plans a few weeks ago.

    I’m going to loop back and see why the upgrade didn’t fix that. We actually wrote it code to force-reset that value whenever a server is upgraded just in case the IP changes! Though you said a few weeks and I bet that was the magical inbetween time :facepalm:
